What you can automate with Gotify

Gotify is a self-hosted, open-source push notification server that lets you send and receive messages through a simple REST API. Unlike services like Pushover or Slack, Gotify runs entirely on your own infrastructure, which means your notification data never passes through a third party. It is lightweight enough to run on a Raspberry Pi and supports message priorities, application-level access tokens, and a web-based UI for managing everything. In n8n, the Gotify node lets you send push notifications as part of your automated workflows. This is useful for alerting yourself or your team when something important happens — a deployment finishes, a monitoring check fails, an order comes through, or a scheduled job completes. Because Gotify is self-hosted, it is particularly well-suited to environments where data privacy matters or where you want to avoid per-message costs from commercial notification services. Osher helps Australian businesses set up self-hosted notification infrastructure as part of broader business automation projects. If you are already running n8n self-hosted, adding Gotify to the same server gives you a private notification channel for your workflows with zero ongoing subscription costs.

Gotify FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about how Gotify consultants can help with integration and implementation

Gotify is purpose-built for push notifications, so it is faster and more lightweight than sending Slack messages or emails. It does not have channels, threads, or rich formatting — it is a straightforward alert system. Use Gotify when you want instant notifications on your phone or desktop without the overhead of a full messaging platform.

How it works

We work hand-in-hand with you to implement Gotify

As Gotify consultants we work with you hand in hand build more efficient and effective operations. Here’s how we will work with you to automate your business and integrate Gotify with integrate and automate 800+ tools.

Step 1

Deploy Gotify on Your Server

Install Gotify using Docker or the standalone binary on your server. The Docker approach is simplest — pull the Gotify image and map the data directory for persistence. Set up a reverse proxy (Caddy or Nginx) with HTTPS so you can access Gotify securely from outside your network.

Step 2

Create Applications and Tokens

Log into the Gotify web interface and create an application for n8n. This generates an API token that n8n will use to send messages. You can create separate applications for different workflow categories (monitoring alerts, order notifications, deployment updates) to keep your notification stream organised.

Step 3

Configure n8n Credentials

In n8n, add a new Gotify credential with your server URL and the application token you generated. Test the connection to confirm n8n can reach your Gotify instance. If you are running both on the same server, you can use the internal Docker network address rather than the public URL.

Step 4

Add Gotify Nodes to Your Workflows

Insert Gotify nodes at the points in your workflows where you want notifications. Set the message title, body, and priority for each notification. Use n8n expressions to include dynamic data — for example, the name of the failed workflow or the value of a new order.

Step 5

Install the Gotify Client on Your Devices

Download the Gotify Android app from F-Droid or GitHub, or bookmark the web interface on iOS. Log in with your client credentials and configure notification preferences (sound, vibration, LED) for different priority levels. Test by triggering a workflow and confirming the notification arrives.

Step 6

Tune Priority Levels and Review

After running for a few days, review your notification volume. Adjust priority levels to reduce noise — low-priority informational messages should not buzz your phone at 2am. Set up quiet hours or filter rules as needed, and confirm that genuinely critical alerts still come through clearly.
